Netiquette

The word netiquette is the combination of “net” and “etiquette”. It is about the manners you have as an internet user, the impression you make (often on people who haven't met you before). Beware that the rules of netiquette may vary according to country.

Basic Netiquette

1. Respect other people’s privacy
  • Do not share another person's personal information, such as their email address or photos, without their permission.

2. Be conscious of your appearance online.
  • Whether you are positing images or writing messages, you will be judged by people who do not know you, but who can see what you are putting online. So keep the following tips in mind:
    • Always check for spelling and grammar errors;
    • Know what you're talking about and state it clearly;
    • Be pleasant and polite.

3. Do not re-post copyrighted material.

  • Many people assume that photos or text posted on the internet can be re-used, however in many cases the material is copyrighted or trademarked in the same way that printed material is. Check first. For example, Google Images allows you to select 'Licensed for reuse' under the Search Tools options; the only pictures that then appear are ones that you are allowed to use on your own webpages (or in your own presentations and assignments).

4. Stay on-topic
  • Try not to post irrelevant topics in a group. This only takes up space and time of other users.

5. Posts are public and cannot be completely deleted.
  • You cannot just hit the delete button and hope that something you have posted will disappear. There is no “Delete” button on the internet. You comment or picture may disappear from the page in front of you, but copies still exist on other pages and on other sites, because so many websites are mirrored elsewhere. Also, be aware that your posts may not be private, and can often be seen by anyone.

6. Beware of cyberbullying
  • There are many ways in which comments and photos posted online can lead to accusations of cyberbullying, no matter how unintentional it was. Because online comments are often short or abbreviated, they can easily be misinterpreted. Also you might believe that something you are writing is confidential, when in fact it could be shared with others without your knowledge. Finally, posting photos of other people without their permission can be very upsetting. Avoid these kinds of problems by thinking carefully about what you are writing or sending, and to whom.

7. Be forgiving of other people's mistakes.
  • Other Internet users may have less experience with email, social networking, and forum participation than you. They may not be aware of the rules of netiquette. At some point, you will see a question that you think is stupid, read a response that you think is unnecessarily long, or notice spelling mistakes. When this happens, be kind; if it's a minor issue, you should probably ignore it. If you think it is necessary to say something, then do so in a private email rather than a public forum.

8. The Golden Rule
  • If you are unsure about the contents of your messages, before you press "send" or "submit," ask yourself this: Would I be okay if someone else had written this and sent it to me?

International Netiquette

Slang

The use of slang words are often only understood within the native speaking community. They can be confusing for the foreign community to understand, and are easily misunderstood, potentially causing offence and ruining relationships.

Time Zones

Countries around the world are in different time zones. It is critical that the sender is conscious about the time differences and national holidays. If the sender wants an immediate reply, they and the receiver must manage the time-zone differences.
