Privacy
Privacy settings: If you have any social network service accounts like FaceBook or Twitter, you really should spend at least a few minutes reviewing the options and advice that they provide for keeping your comments and photos private. If you do not look at your account settings, you may find that the words and images on your page are actually viewable by people you don't know, such as friends of friends. See http://www.facebook.com/help/ for example.

Deleting files: the first rule of privacy on the internet is to make sure you only post photos and comments that you have chosen carefully and are happy to share indefinitely. That is because, whilst it is easy and quick to post something on the internet, it is extremely hard or even impossible to delete it afterwards. Friends can often download their own copy of your photo or make a direct link to your picture on their page; if they do, that picture will remain on the internet even after you have hidden or deleted it from your own page. So before you post anything personal, remember that "there is no delete button on the Internet" and whatever you put up on the internet is "going to follow you for the rest of your life" (Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, 2012).

http://www.facebook.com/help/

(Eric Schmidt、GoogleのCEO、2012)

Personal data and passwords
Computer security: Your computer should always have up-to-date antivirus software installed. There are a re range of free and paid-for programmes available for PCs and Macs. Although viruses are less common on Macs, you can still unwittingly forward infected files to other users if you do not have the software installed to catch them.

Also, you should either have automatic software updates turned on, or you should manually check for operating system updates regularly. Many threats are not viruses at all; hackers can access and control a computer through flaws in the system software, so patches and updates should be installed as soon as they become available.
Information on how to enable automatic updates on a Windows PC can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

and information enabling automatic updates on a Mac can be found here:

How to create a strong password: In order to keep your account or computer safe, it helps to know how to create a strong password that will be harder to hack. There are several things you should keep in mind while creating a new password for an account or document

  1. Avoid using standard words from the dictionary: it is recommended that you don't use a word that can be found in a dictionary, as computer programmes designed to hack passwords will try millions of combinations of these to try and break a password. For example, it would not take a computer long to guess birthdaycake.
  2. Use both lowercase and uppercase: a password can use both lowercase and uppercase, so making a random selection of letters in your password uppercase will help to make it stronger. For example birthdaycake can become BirTHDaycakE.
  3. Add numbers and other symbols: Passwords can become more complex and therefore stronger with the addition of numbers and other symbols. A common way is to change some of the letters into similar looking numbers (E becomes 3, S becomes 2) or into similar looking symbols (a becomes @). For example, BirTHDaycakE can become BirTHD@yc@k3.
  4. Longer passwords are stronger: The longer and more complex your password is, the harder it will be to hack. The minimum recommended length is 6 characters, however you should usually try to make a password between 8-12 characters long.
  5. Avoid using the same password multiple times: The danger is that if your password is compromised, a hacker can try the same combination on hundreds of popular websites to see if it works elsewhere.
  6. Instead of writing your passwords down, use a password programme: There are many password applications for computers, iOS devices and smartphones, that can store all of your passwords securely. Instead of remembering many different passwords, you just need to remember one - the password to access the application. This allows you to use a wide range of secure passwords safely, since you do not need to memorise them all.

たとえば、birthdaycake(バースデーケーキ)のような言葉では、簡単に推測できるからです。
BirTHDaycakE.

Google is tracking you

Google has created a new site where you can access and control all of the security settings and options for all of your Google applications.

Go to
https://myaccount.google.com/intro and sign-in to access your settings.

Here are some of the things you can do with My Account:
  • Take the Privacy Checkup and Security Checkup, Google's step-by-step guides through your most important privacy and security settings.
  • Use the Ads Settings tool to control ads based on your interests and the searches you’ve done.
  • Control which apps and sites are connected to your account.
In particular, take time to look at the Ads settings and Account history to find out how much information Google currently has about your preferences.
